ஸ்ரீரங்கத்தில், தன் அண்ணனின் திருக்கோவிலில் குடி கொண்டிருந்த அன்னை, அண்ணனின் ஆட்சியில் இருந்து விலகி, தனக்கான பக்தர்களை உருவாக்குவதற்கு ஒரு திருவிளையாடலை நடத்தி, அங்கிருந்த ஜுயர்ஜ சுவாமிகள் மூலமாக ஆணையிடுகிறாள். அவரும் ஆட்களை வரவழைத்து, தாயை சுமந்து செல்ல கட்டளை இடுகிறார். வழியில் குறுக்கிட்டது வேம்புக்காடு. அங்கு தன்னை தூக்கிச் செல்பவர்களுக்கு பாரத்தினை அதிகப்படுத்த, அந்த வேம்புக்காட்டில் இறக்கி வைக்குமாறு செய்தாள். பிறகு தன்னை மறுபடியும் எடுக்க முற்படும்போது, தன்னை அங்கேயே விட்டுச் செல்லுமாறு அசரீரியாக கட்டளையிட்டாள். அந்த இடம்தான் "கண்ணனூர்". அது தற்சமயம் கலியுகத்தின் கண்கண்ட தெய்வம் ஸ்ரீ மாரியம்மன் குடிகொண்டுள்ள சமயபுரமே ஆகும். சமயபுரம் என்றால் சமய வேறுபாடு இன்றி அனைத்து தரப்பு மக்களையும், அன்னை தன் வசப்படுத்தி, ஆட்சி செய்யும் இடம். ஆதியில் வேம்புக்காட்டில் வந்து அமர்ந்ததால் இத்திருக்கோயிலின் தலவிருட்சம் வேப்பமரம் ஆகும். எத்தனையோ ஊர்களில், எத்தனையோ தெய்வங்கள் இருந்தாலும்,எந்த தெய்வமும் உலக மக்கள் நன்மைக்காக "உண்ணா நோன்பு" இருப்பதில்லை. ஆனால், அன்னை ஸ்ரீ சமயபுரம் மாரியம்மன், ஒவ்வொரு வருடமும், மாசி மாத கடைசி ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமையில், உண்ணா நோன்பு தொடங்கி, பங்குனி கடைசி ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை வரை 28 நாட்கள் விரதம் இருக்கிறாள். உலகத்திலேயே இத் திருக்கோயிலில் தான், தெய்வமே உலக மக்களின் நன்மைக்காக விரதம் இருக்கிறாள். எனவேதான் சக்தி பீடங்களில் தலைசிறந்த தளமாக விளங்குகிறது - சமயபுரம்.
