பார் புகழும் புலவர், கவிச்சக்கரவர்த்தி,என்று புகழப்பட்ட ஒட்டக்கூத்தர் ஆரம்ப காலத்தில் அடப்பக்கார பையனாக வேலை பார்த்தார். அடப்பக்காரர் என்றால், தேவையான அளவு பாக்கு ,சுண்ணாம்பு வைத்து வெற்றிலையை மடித்துக் கொடுப்பது. பிறகு அவர்கள் வெற்றிலை எச்சிலைத் துப்பும் போது, ஒரு குவளையில் வாங்கி வைப்பது.
ஒட்டக்கூத்தரின் பண்பு, இயல்பு,நல்லொழுக்கம்,அறிவு,பணிவு,பக்தியை கண்ட வள்ளல் சங்கரரின் நெருங்கிய உறவினரான காங்கேயன், இவருக்கு நல்ல கல்வி புகட்டி வாழ்வில் உயர்த்த நினைத்தார். கணக்காயர் ஒருவரிடம் கல்வி கற்க அனுப்பி வைத்தார் . ஒட்டக்கூத்தரும் வெகு விரைவில் கல்வி கற்று, கவி பாடும் திறனை அடைந்தார். தனது புகழுக்கு மிக்க காரணமாக இருந்த காங்கேயனை, கூத்தர் மறக்கவில்லை .அவருக்கு நன்றி பாராட்டி,' நாலாயிரக் கோவை' என்னும ஓர் பெரிய பிரபந்தம் பாடினார். கூத்தரின் புகழை கேள்விப்பட்ட சோழ மன்னன் விக்ரம சோழன், தனது அரசவைப் புலவராக அவரை நியமனம் செய்தார். கூத்தரிடம் இருந்து வறுமை ஓடிவிட்டது. பணம், புகழ், கீர்த்தி,அரசு ஆதிக்கம், எல்லாம் வந்தது என்ற போதும், மனம் நிம்மதி அடையவில்லை. எனவே, அவர் கவி பாடியதும், நினைத்தது எல்லாம் உடனே நடக்கும் 'வரகவியாக' வருவதற்கு, அன்னை சரஸ்வதியின் பரிபூரண அருளைப் பெற நினைத்தார். மன்னனிடம் தனக்கு தோன்றிய எண்ணத்தை சொன்னதும், மன்னனும் வேண்டியதை செய்தான். சரஸ்வதியை ஆவாகனம் செய்து வழிபட தனிமையான ஓர் இடத்தை தேடினார் கூத்தர். தேடியபடி, தெய்வீக சக்தி நிறைந்த இடமாக கூத்தனூர் அமைந்தது. புனிதமான ஆறான அரசலாற்றின் கரையில் அமர்ந்து சரஸ்வதியை நோக்கி தவம் மேற்கொண்டார். அவரின் பக்திக்கும், தவத்திற்கும் மகிழ்ந்த அன்னை சரஸ்வதி தேவி, ஓர் அழகிய இளம் நங்கை உருவில் கூத்தரின் முன்பு தோன்றி, தனது நாவில் இருந்த தாம்பூலத்தை கூத்தரின் நாவில் உமிழ்நது மறைந்தாள். ஆம்! கூத்தர் 'வரகவி' ஆனார். சரஸ்வதிக்கு ஓர் ஆலயம் எழுப்ப உறுதிபூண்டு, சோழ மன்னனின் உதவியோடு, கூத்தரால் உருவானதே 'கூத்தனூர்' என்று அழைக்கப்படும், உலகில் வேறு எங்குமே இல்லாத சரஸ்வதி தேவிக்கான தனிக்கோயில். திருவாரூரில் இருந்து மயிலாடுதுறை செல்லும் சாலையில் சுமார் 15 கிலோ மீட்டர் தொலைவில், பூந்தோட்டம் என்ற ஊரில், இந்த கூத்தனூர் சரஸ்வதி கோயில் உள்ளது. இவளைத் தாமரை மலரால் அர்ச்சனை செய்தால், நிறைந்த ஞானம் வழங்குவாள். கல்வியில் சிறக்கலாம், பதவி உயர்வும், செல்வமும், புகழும் கிடைக்கும்.
Ottakkoothar, who was famous as a famous poet and poet, worked as a handyman in his early days. Atappakar means folding the betel leaves with required amount of gourd and lime. Then when they spit out the betel nut, they buy it in a mug.Kangeyan, a close relative of Valal Sankara, who saw Ottakootha's character, nature, virtue, knowledge, humility and devotion, wanted to give him a good education and raise him in life. He sent him to study with an accountant. Ottakoothar too was soon educated and acquired the ability to sing poetry. Kuthar did not forget Kangeyan, who was the main reason for his fame. In gratitude to him, he sang a great prabandham called 'Nalairak Kowai'.
The Chola king Vikrama Chola, who heard of Kuthar's fame, appointed him as his court scholar. Poverty has fled from Kuthar. Even when money, fame, fame, government power, everything came, the mind did not get peace.So, when he sang Kavi, he thought of getting the perfect grace of Mother Saraswati to become 'Varakavi' where everything he thought would happen immediately. When he told the king what he had in mind, the king did the right thing.
Kuthar searched for a secluded place to worship Saraswati. As sought after, Kuthanur became a place full of divine power. He sat on the banks of the sacred Six Rivers and performed penance towards Saraswati. Mother Saraswati Devi, pleased with his devotion and penance, appeared in front of the cowherd in the form of a beautiful young maiden and disappeared after spitting out the tambulam from her tongue on the cowherd's tongue. Yes! Kouthar became 'Varakavi'.
Determined to build a temple for Saraswati, with the help of the Chola king, Kuthar built a unique temple dedicated to Goddess Saraswati called 'Koothanur'. About 15 kilometers from Thiruvarur on the road to Mayiladuthurai, in a town called Poonthottam, there is this Kuthanur Saraswati Temple. If you worship her with a lotus flower, she will bestow abundant wisdom. May excel in education, get promotion, wealth and fame.
