சித்ரா பௌர்ணமி நன்னாளில், அன்னை பார்வதி தேவி, தன் கைத் திறமையால் ஒரு அழகான குழந்தை ஓவியத்தை வரைந்தாள். அந்த ஓவியம், நிஜக் குழந்தை போல் தத்ரூபமாக இருந்ததைக் கண்டு சிவபெருமான் பார்வதியிடம்," நீ வரைந்த இந்த ஓவியத்திற்கு உயிர் கொடுத்தால், இன்னும் அழகாக இருக்கும்" என்று கூறிக் கொண்டே, தன் கைகளால் எடுத்து, தன் மூச்சுக்காற்றை ஓவியத்தின் மேல் படும்படி செய்தார். இந்த அற்புதத்தை கண்ட பார்வதி தேவி மகிழ்ச்சியடைந்து, அந்தக் குழந்தைக்கு "சித்திரகுப்தன்" என்று பெயர் வைத்தாள்.எமதர்மராஜாவின் கவலைகளைப் போக்க, சக்தியால் உருவாக்கப்பட்ட, சித்திரக் குழந்தையான சித்திரகுப்தனை, எமலோகத்தில் யார்,யார் எந்த அளவிற்கு பாவ புண்ணியம் செய்கிறார்கள்? என்பதை கவனித்து கணக்கு எழுதும் பதவியில் அமர்த்தியவர் பிரம்மதேவர். இவ்வாறே இவர் எழுதும் குறிப்புகள் "ஆகாஷிக் குறிப்புகள்" என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறது. தென்னிந்தியாவில் இவருக்காக பல கோயில்கள் உண்டு. குறிப்பாக, காஞ்சிபுரத்தில் உள்ளது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. சித்திரகுப்தர், எமன், பிரம்மா உடன் கடம்பூர் தல இறைவனை வணங்கும் காட்சி கடம்பூர் தளத்தில் இடம்பெற்றுள்ளது. தேனி மாவட்டம் கோடாங்கி பட்டியில் இவருக்கு "சித்திர புத்திர நாயனார்" என்ற பெயருடன் கோயில் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. நவக்கிரகங்களில் கேதுவுக்கு சித்திரகுப்தர் தான் அதிபதி என்றும், கேது தோசத்தால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டவர்கள்,இவரை வழிபட்டால், அந்த தோஷம் நீங்கும் என்ற நம்பிக்கையும் உள்ளது. சித்ரா பவுர்ணமி தினத்தன்று, எண்ணெய் தேய்த்துக் குளித்தால், சித்திரகுப்தன் அவர்களின் பாவங்களைக் குறைப்பார் என்பதும் ஒரு நம்பிக்கை.
